I created North East Book Box to support local writers, creatives, and charities
In 2022, fairly close together, three events happened to me which inspired me to create North East Book Box. My neighbour, Kayode Akinropo knocked on my door to tell me he'd written and published a book. A fellow Newcastle United fan, Angie Stanger-Leathes asked me to write a chapter in her re-release of her book Football a Passion in Black and White. My mam, bought me a copy of Tom Curry's book Wor Tomis the Polis, found through Facebook with £5 from each sale going to Ukraine.
I'd gotten back into reading around 2020 as a way of supporting my poor mental health at the time, alongside going on walks. The mixture of my newly refreshed love of books, and the three events mentioned inspired me to create a new subscription box helping people discover local authors and their creative works, whilst supporting local writers and creatives to get noticed, and supporting local charities to support the local community or to inspire the next generation of writers.
